In this hi-tech age in which we live we we are constantly being bombarded with voices and visual impressions all trying to influence us in one way or another.
Apart from this our own lives are constantly under stress as we try to face multiple challenges on a daily basis. These vary from being little annoyances to major crisis .
The bothersome distractions can be minor, such as as we forgot to recharge the iphone and so can’t use it when we want to or major catastrophes such as a family crisis.
Notice how much even the minor irritations can consume our minds.
It is hard to keep our minds calm and tranquil with so much disturbance going on around us, and in fact a lot of that clamor ends up inside of our minds as well. So how can we get rid all of this noise and clutter that ends up in our minds?
Well lets consider briefly:
Seven things that can clutter and overload the mind and how to unload them.
1. Negative thoughts will attract negative things into our lives.
Negative thoughts send all kinds of messengers scurrying to every part of the body with their poison. As well as the effect on our bodies, they have a way of consuming our minds.
We need to take every negative thought and turn it into a positve one. Words and phrases like”
- “I can’t”
- “I never will be able to”
- “I am not sure about”
need to be turned into:
- “Yes I can”
- “I WILL achieve everything I want to”
- “I am confident that I can do this”
2. Worry can surely consume our thoughts.
How often do we spend a lot of energy and time worrying about things instead of planning the way out of the dilema we may have found ourselves in (or praying about the things we cannot control). Worry clouds the mind and worse still, attracts the very thing you are worrying about.
A plan of action and prayer will help us focus on the possibilites instead of the problems. This will help bring hope and faith which will clear the mind.
3. Fear can really dominate the mind, body and spirit.
It is really a step further ahead of worry. We start worrying about something and next thing fear grips our hearts and minds AND we attract the thing we are worrying about.
Fear is best described as misguided faith. Instead of believing for the good things to happen, the mind is always fearing (or believing for) the worst.
A real life proof of this in my own family: I had an uncle, my father’s only brother whom I vaguely remember (I was 3 years old when I last saw him). His one fear in life was he would get sick with polio which at the time was an epidemic. He died of polio at the age of 21.
We need to focus our minds on positive outcomes for all situations in life. (Taking time every day to stop and read some inspirational material such as the Psalms from the Bible will help us with this exercise).
4. We try to learn everything at once.
There is so much knowledge available to us today, that we often fall into the trap of trying to learn everything at once.
A bowl of cereal is eaten one spoon at a time. If we tried to eat the whole bowl at once we would choke.
Don’t worry, the source of your study will still be there tomorrow. You can afford to learn one thing at a time.
5. We try to do everything at once,
In this multi task society the race is to see who can do more things at once. Not only does this send the mind running in all directions, but neo scientists will tell you that mutli tasking affects the intelligence negatively.
Slow down, try doing and thinking about one thing at a time.
6. We don’t have a defined sense of destiny.
One of my favorite “hobbies” is asking teenagers what their goals in life are. Well I could write a full book on those experiences, sufficient to say that 95-99% have no clue.
No wonder there is so much confusion in their lives. Confusion is poison to the mind. A lack of knowledge of our true destiny, leaves the mind wandering all over the place and of course confusion takes advantage of that.
Taking time to determine where you are going will certainly help clarify your mind and bring other things into their right priorities.
7. Lack of forgiveness. This is a big one.
When our lives are filled with unforgiveness, our minds are so often consumed with the “dramas” of what we would do to them (if it were legal) and so many other negative things.
The way to clear this rubble from our minds is simple — forgive.
Note: Forgiveness is a choice not a feeling.
