The Dream or Passion Factor

Hi, its great to see you back!

No 5 of the Series: Success Factors:

To achieve the impossible dream, try going to sleep. Joan Klempner

What a cynical quotation this is!

However I used it because it reveals an attitude I have heard SO many times. It comes from those who have a dream but that is all they have. Everyone has a dream, or a longing, but not everyone has a real desire, much less much less a passion for their dream.

How many young children or even teenagers have you heard say:
I would like to be in the Olympics when I grow up, or …
I would like to be in the Spurs Basketball Team one day (yep this is San Antonio, Texas calling.)

But do they REALLY desire those things? Many of them grow up and do very little with their lives).

Then now and again you hear someone say: “I am GOING TO BE an Olympic player” or “I am GOING TO BE a successful business man/woman” and they achieve it.

What is the difference between the two statements?

One is saying:
I want to be (this is a wish or a dream and is passive).

The other is saying:
I am going to be (this is a desire or a passion and is active).

The first group never achieves their dreams which they sometimes mistake as goals, and as time goes by they become cynical and even jeer at those who are starting out in life with great expectations.

These are the discouragers. You don’t want to listen to this group.

The second group has an excellent running chance of succeeding in life and achieving all of their goals. They start out with a declaration that shows desire with determination.

The dictionary describes the word desire as “wanting strongly”, and the word passion as “an irrational but irresistible motive for a belief or action”. As you can see here both words are similar, but passion is stronger.

According to Willie Shoemaker: the key to the success of excelling athletes is their desire. This is the driving factor.

In any area of life, the achievement of success will also be greatly driven by desire.

So let’s take a look at our own lives:

My Checklist:
When I look at my list of goals for my life:

How many of them are just wants or dreams (“maybes”)?
How many of the items on this list do I REALLY have a passion for?
What is my ACTION PLAN to achieve these items on my list?

Is your dream just a dream? Or do you have a passion?
