No. 7 of Series: Success Factors.
Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how you’ll you do it. Lou Holtz
I would add to this quote: Action with determination shows commitment and leads to success
The dictionary describes commitment as the act of binding yourself (intellectually or emotionally) to a course of action.
I would suggest to you that commitment to success requires the binding of ourselves intellectually AND emotionally to the chosen course of action. Now, this does NOT mean an exclusive binding of our emotions and intellects.
In another words you WILL “have a life” as you pursue your journey towards success, but you will also realize that some sacrifices will be essential in order to attain the goal set before you.
Before Making the Commitment:
Before you commit yourself to a certain pursuit, you need to take some time to think about what you want to achieve, why you want to achieve it and how you plan to start on the road towards this goal.
- What do you want to achieve? Do you have the goal defined, or is it still a bit hazy?
If you do not have a clear picture of what you want to achieve, then when things get difficult and you start to lose site of the goal because of the tedious task you may be facing on the journey, it will be much more tempting to give up.
- Why do you want to achieve this goal?
If you cannot answer this question with at least some passion, then you certainly need to think again.
Is this just a fleeting dream you are planning on pursuing? Or is it REALLY important enough to you that you will be able to commit to it with that binding of yourself intellectually or emotionally. Remember this is the definition of commitment we considered at the beginning of this article.
(Check out my article Your Life Purpose and Your Business which will help you measure the real importance of the goal you have set.
- How do you plan to reach this goal?
This may not be fully clear at first. Many times you need to have started on a road before you find the corners and options that will present themselves on the journey.
You will be more capable of making the choices these options will require once you have started traveling this road to success, since you will have gained at least some experience by then.
- Once the what, the why and the how are answered, now it will be time to decide on the when.
When do you plan to start? Of course there is no time like the present! Is there any reason you can’t start today?
