Many of us have at least heard of the movie “The Secret” with Bob Proctor, Jack Canfield and Dr Michael Beckwith. Their movie is based on The Science of Getting Rich written by Wallace D Wattles.
These authors have in a way been attributed to the discovery of The Secret, and since the release of the movie, the Law of Attraction is becoming more and more popular today.
However long before Wallace Wattles was even born, another man revealed this secret when he expressed the main principle in his own words saying:
As a man thinks in his heart (his subsconcious mind), so is he. Proverbs 23:7, written by the wisest man who ever lived, Solomon.
The only difference between this statement and the teachings of The Secret is the terminology. The principle is the same. The Secret is no secret.
However when a doctrine, philosophy or discovered truth (call it what you will), is revealed and carried from one human to another the complete TRUTH gets distorted.
In this case we have ended up with people teaching things like “just think it and it will manifest or happen” In the christian church the very same truth has been distorted by some in the exact same way – again the terminology is different, but the principle is the same: “just believe it, confess it and it will happen”
In both cases, they only have half a truth, and the cliche a little knowledge is a dangerous thing comes into play here. Both have ended up with a band of followers out on left wing proclaiming:
All you have to do is think (or confess, believing) something into existence and presto a shiny new Mercedes will end up on your driveway and you will be handed the keys.
Mm — not really. Sadly many lives have been destroyed by this “truth” that became error.
One of my favorite passages of the Bible is the scene where Abraham sends his servant off to find his son, Isaac a wife (those were the days). The servant sets out on his journey and ends up in Mesopotamia where he finds the right girl.
He was thrilled at the success of his mission, and then Rebekah, (the girl) takes him to her father’s house where he tells his story. The words in his testimony that have always stood out to me are: “I being in the way, the Lord led me”.
“Being in the way” – that’s action. In modern day terms, this could be rephrased, “I was actively involved in working towards my goal, when I found success”
Ah — here’s the real secret.
Right thinking (faith, believing) +
ACTION = SUCCESS!
