Here are three more secrets that can be found in the lives of all successful people.

1. Successful people DREAM.

The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. Eleanor Roosevelt

Every success story starts with a dream.

As we noted in the previous post 3 Simple Secrets of Successful People, one key characteristics of a successful man or woman is that they first discovered their purpose in life (or their why) and pursued it with all their might.

Have you found your WHY (your purpose in life)?

Your why is your reason for doing what you do. Your why is also your reason for pursuing your dreams.

You will probably have many dreams in life. These will be things you want to experience, to do, to be or to have.

For example:

You may dream of taking a camping trip in Europe,

You might dream of trying your hand at some horse riding in the Grand Canyon

You might want to become a teacher or a public speaker

You may even dream of having a house overlooking a lake or the sea

Reaching these dreams may not be the total fulfillment of your life’s purpose, but they may certainly play a part in reaching your WHY.

The key is to allow yourself to dream and dream BIG.

2. Successful people BELIEVE in their dreams, in their why and in themselves.
If you dream and dream and yet do not believe in your dreams much less believe in yourself you will not get very far. In fact your dreams will be little more than airy fairy wishes without a strong belief in yourself and in your ability to achieve great things in life.

The level of your ability to believe in your dreams and your ability to achieve them will greatly depend on your mindset. If you discover that there is too much negativity in your mindset (your belief system), then the solution is start yourself on a good self development program.

3. Successful people are ACTIVELY involved in pursuing the fulfillment of their dreams and goals.

Dreaming is good.

Setting goals and action plans are good.

Believing you can achieve your goals and dreams is excellent.

But without the very important ingredient of ACTION – nothing will be achieved.

There is a verse in the Bible that says “faith without works is dead” (James 2 verse 17 in the Bible).

A German friend who lived in Mexico used to say: “El interés tiene pies” – Interest has feet. In other words if you are REALLY interested in achieving your goals, you will give your plans and dreams some feet – your feet.

So dream, believe and ACT and you WILL be successful.

Here is an action plan to get you started right now:
1. Make sure you know your WHY. Write it down and read it every day.

Get this CD (Find Your Why Now).
Listen to it, make notes and follow your notes.

2. Start a self development plan. Order this book RIGHT NOW Activating Your Ambition, A Guide to Coaching the Best Out of Yourself and Others

Read it through. Use a pencil to mark the areas that jump out at you.

Go back and reread the important points which you marked. Make notes.

Use this book as a guide to make your self development plan.

Start following your plan immediately.

And never forget:

1. A Purpose In Life – or A “Why”
Have you taken time to write out your purpose in life? Your why?

If you are building and/or running a business just to make money, there is a good chance you will fail.

Your primary focus needs to be your WHY (your purpose in life). Your purpose for what you do is what is going to drive you forward no matter what happens.

When your motive is to make a difference in other people’s lives (which should be the main focus of your WHY), you have made a major step forward towards succeeding with your business.

2. Self Development
Successful people make self development a priority. They live a life of continuous learning, development and purpose. Mike Hawkins – Activate Your Ambition.

Do you follow a plan for self development?

You can only lead and coach others to the level that you yourself are on.

Are you annihilating all negative thoughts, memories and influences with your daily affirmations?

Are you continually learning? Knowledge is increasing fast these days. Are you keeping up with it new developments in your field of expertise?

Someone said: A college education will make you a living, but self education will make you a fortune.

Which do you want? A living or a fortune?

3. Physical Development – Your Health.
Your physical health is definitely a very important part of your success.

Success means you are free to do what you want to, when you want to with whom you want to. It does not matter how much money you have in the bank, if you do not have your health, then you don’t have this complete freedom.

This means that it is important to have a daily plan to help maintain your health. Your focus will be on right eating, adequate exercise and rest.

Are you eating healthy?

Are you exercising adequately?

Are you getting the rest you need?

I am sure that you are focusing on these areas of your life, because this is what champions do, and:

The difference between those who succeed and those who call themselves failures is often just one step. Anyone who is enjoying success today has faced failure, and not just once, but many times.

What if Thomas Edison gave up trying to invent the light bulb after just 1000 attempts at finding the right material? After all 1000 attempts is a LOT of time and effort.

This quote from Thomas Edison shows his attitude towards failure:

Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.

He life certainly demonstrated this as it is recorded that he finally reached his goal after the 10,000th attempt. Failure was not an option to Thomas Edison. His focus was on success, and he achieved it.

What if Henry Ford did not persist on his mission to invent the motor car?

He had some interesting things to say about failure:

Even a mistake may turn out to be the one thing necessary to a worthwhile achievement.

Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.

Henry Ford had his eyes set on success and we are still driving Fords today in the 21st Century.

Frank Kern
Check out this video. You have likely heard of Frank Kern. Frank started out trying to make $300 a week. He failed! But he persisted and finally achieved his goal, then $2500 in a few days and now he is a multi-millionaire (and quite famous too).

Shoemoney confesses his failures. He even wrote about them in a blog post: Top 10 Worst Ideas To Make Money Today Shoemoney is also well know for his super success.

It is obvious that he also persisted.

Now its your turn – are you next in line to achieve success?

Here’s the secret not too many people want to know:
Genius is one percent inspiration, 99 percent perspiration Thomas Edison

Yes it takes persistence! A determination to never give up. Don’t let any failure stop you from achieving your goal. Again, Thomas Edison is quoted as saying: “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up” You don’t want to give up just one step from success right? Right, I know you are persistent. You will win!

Are you ready right now for success? If you have not already done so, make sure you watch this interview with Tony Robbins, Frank Kern and John Reese. It will inspire you.

And never forget:

Fear is one of the strongest emotions that can pop up and try to stop you from succeeding.

Fear comes in many shapes and forms. Sometimes we may even mistake fear for precaution. Fear can even disguise itself as "being conservative".

Now I am not saying that to succeed you have to be rash and reckless. Absolutely not. But you DO have to take some risks.

Do you know that the fear of failure will always paralyze your attempts to step out and succeed in your chosen path in life.

Fear is one of the strongest emotions that can pop up and try to stop you from succeeding.

Fear comes in many shapes and forms. Sometimes we may even mistake fear for precaution. Fear can even disguise itself as “being conservative”.

Now I am not saying that to succeed you have to be rash and reckless. Absolutely not. But you DO have to take some risks.

Someone said: “he is risks nothing, achieves nothing”. There is a great truth in that. Risk taking is a part of the path to success. Of course the risks need to be well calculated.

I know that the first time I flew out of Christchurch, New Zealand destined for the mission field (the unknown), it felt like I was jumping off a cliff. In fact across the years, each time the plane took off from NZ to go back to the other side of the world, this sensation was very real.

I never found the bottom of that cliff! During one trip back to NZ, I met up with some of my collegues from the Bible college who told me “You were the only one in our class who knew what she was going to do and went out and did it”. (That’s actually a sad statement – for them).

Failure was never an option! So I succeeded

So what does it take to avoid the fear of failure?

FOCUS:

You need a goal or target which will give you the direction.

You need to be so focused on this goal, that failure does not even have room to enter your mind.

Because you know what your goal is, decisions that you will need to make on the way will be easier.

Does this mean you will not make mistakes? I wish I could tell you that you won’t. You probably will. But again, because you are FOCUSED on your goal, those failures will not stop you from succeeding.

Stay busy with your success plan, and failure will be pushed out of your life.
A great part of this success plan will include a daily self development plan. Listen to motivational and inspirational CDs and mp3s. Read good books.

Download 7 great FREE motivational mp3s by clicking right here.

As Oral Roberts so aptly puts it: “You can’t go under for going over!”

Tim Knox is a very well known and highly successful entrepreneur who hosted a weekly radio show called the Tim Knox Show (I loved that show).

He went on to write his best seller: Everything I Know About Business I Learned From My Mama which is a mixture of common sense business advice with the kind of humor that only Tim can bring.

Now Tim is a very dynamic person, always coming up with new and great ideas. One day it occurred to him that new up and coming entrepreneurs could learn so much from the advice of those who have already achieved success.

But the question was, what would be the most beneficial advice that these already great successful entrepreneurs could give to those aspiring for success.

So Tim got out his computer and wrote the following letter to all his business friends:

Greetings,

I propose to you the following challenge:

You awake one morning to discover that your world has been turned upside down.

Your cash cow online business has disappeared while you slept. You have lost all your money, along with your famous name and and reputation.

All you have left is the brain in your head and the experience gained from building your business.

And it gets worse. Your debts are mounting and bill collectors are harassing you over the phone.

You have a guaranteed roof over your head, a telephone line, and an internet connection for only 30 days. After that you’re on your own.

To coin a phrase: YOU MUST START OVER FROM SCRATCH… and you only have 30 DAYS to pull it off.

My question to you is this: Given these circumstances, what would you do, from DAY 1 to DAY 30, to save yourself and get back on top?

How would your personal “30 Day Blueprint For Success” read?

I look forward to your response,

What would YOU do in such circumstances? Perhaps you are already in the midst of a similar situation!

Perhaps the biggest difference between you and I finding ourselves facing this challenge and these already successful entrepreneurs facing the same is that that knew what to do because they had done it before.

None of them had achieved their success easily.

All of them had gone through desperate situations, some many times.

All of them had found the way to fight through many difficulties and rise to the top. They did not let desperation take over. They remained in control and conquered.

They all knew that when things got desperate, it was time for action, not panic.

When all was said and done, 58 of the Internet’s Top Money Makers had each submitted complete blueprints for success.

I’m not talking about a few paragraphs of fluff.

I’m talking about intense, detailed, step-by-step instructions that take you from Day 1 to Day 30 and beyond!

You can find these blueprints right here and follow their steps to discover what the steps you can take that will lead you to YOUR success!

This past Friday a great Oscar-winning actor, entrepreneur, philanthropist, activist and race car driver, Paul Newman died at the age of 83.

His great achievements showed him to be a man who was desperate for success.

At the age of 70 a large percentage of men and women consider themselves retired and some sadly simply spend their days in frivolity while waiting to die.

But not Paul Newman, he was still busy pursing new goals and achieving outstanding things such as winning the Daytona 24-Hours sports car endurance race at this age of 70 years. What drove him? A strong passion to succeed. He was desperate for success!

I am so thankful for the influence of my parents in my life. Dad would often say I am not retired, I am re-fired and I plan on living that way also!

A True Story

Last night @JPmicek sent the following quote over twitter: MOGULOGIC: You’ll never possess anything you desire until burning pursuit overwhelms the passivity of living without it.

This quote caused me to remember a story told by an elderly pastor in a village in Mexico.

This story although it was told by a preacher, can certainly be applied to any pursuit in life, and vividly describes the meaning of passion which certainly involves being desperate for something.

A young man in his late teens admired an older preacher whose life had touched multitudes in a very positive way.

This boy recognized that the preacher had something special that stood out from many others and he approached the elderly gentleman saying:

I Want What You Have.

The teenager pestered and pestered the gentleman wanting to know how to reach the level the success in life that he had reached.

So the elderly preacher decided to show this young man exactly how to achieve what he wanted. He told him: “ok, meet me here at 4.30am tomorrow morning and I will show you”. What? 4.30am!

What Is Going On?

However the teenager knew what he wanted, so he showed up at that hour the next morning. They set off for a long drive. The exercise seemed pointless to the young teenage lad, but he did not say anything.

Next thing they found themselves in a remote area way out in the country, by a river.

The older man seemed to take his time doing everything ever so slowly. Then finally he told the boy to get into the river. It was freezing cold!

A Freezing Cold Morning!

The boy politely obeyed and the elderly preacher put his firm hands on the boy’s head and pushed him under the water and held him there. The boy struggled of course, hard ut the preacher insisted on having him stay under water until he was fighting hafor his life.

What Did You Do That For?

Finally as the boy was struggling in great desperation the preacher let him go. Bewildered the boy screamed at the preacher “what did you do that for”?

Definition of Passion

The reply gave the key to the definition of passion. “When you want what you say you want as desperately as you wanted to breathe just now we’ll talk”

What a challenge! How desperately do you want to fulfill your dreams?

Are you desperate for success?

58 successful entrepreneurs were given 30 days to start again from scratch and recover their wealth, Could they do it? They had already reached success once.

Now with everything taken away from them could they recover in just 30 days? Were they really desperate for success? Read their stories here.

No. 6 of Series: Success Factors.

I am sure you are familiar with the story of the frog. This story is a classic one that illustrates the results of conformity. It goes like this:

The frog is set in a pan of water and he is in his element, happily enjoying the water. You put the pan over some heat, just a little, and the water starts to get a little warm, but the frog accommodates and continues to enjoy the water.

After all warm water is not so bad. Gradually you turn up the heat, and with each increase of temperature, the frog adjusts and continues with his play.

Next thing he knows (or perhaps by now he doesn’t know) it’s Bon Apetit!

Frog legs for lunch!

What happened? Little by little the frog conformed or accommodated himself to the change in temperature and once he got used to it, the heat increased and he repeated the process.

Finally it was too late. The climate was beyond his ability to deal with, but all the time he was totally unaware of what was happening, and now the situation was way outside of his control.

“So what does that have to do with me?” you might be thinking. In at least some areas of our lives, or at one time or another we have all fallen into the conformity trap.

For some of us it may have taken a lifetime to end up
like the frog (fully cooked), but it happened.

Wikipedi defines confirmity:
Conformity is the result of a process by which people’s beliefs or behaviors are influenced by others within a group in the formation and maintenance of social norms.

That is the key in the story of the frog is that the change was subtle and reaching the horrific end result was a process. This is the deception we are dealing with. The responses to the influences are subtle and the resulting change is indeed a process. The conformity virus catches us unawares!

Let’s take a look at some of the things we conform to. A lot of these things we are unaware of because we grew up with them, we never knew anything different.

Some of the classics comments I hear all the time:

“Well I did not need it anyway” when faced with a loss.

My mother always said …

I don’t need much, all I need to earn is just enough for food and rent.

I can live without this or them

Well I just don’t come from a rich family, but that is fine …

I tried many of those strategies, but they did not work for me. Oh well I guess it is just not for me.

We can discover these “conformities” by taking note of our responses to what happens to us or around us, whether they be thoughts, words or actions.

All of those phrases in the examples above are negative, and I am sure you also have heard them many times.

Of course you have never used them right? Mm, I think if we are all honest at one time or another we have a least been tempted to give up in some area of our lives.

So what IS conformity?
It is an attitude that adjusts to small “insignificant” failures or negative situations that over time become big negatives in our lives.

You know, the times you give yourself “permission” to fail on your daily goals (just for today of course),

How can I stop this conformity virus from contaminating my mindset?

Become consciously aware of certain words and phrases that you think or speak:
Phrases such as – oh well, well I don’t need it anyway, well I really can live without it, well I never did expect to be as good as (some person you look up to).

Checklist:
How many times a day do such thoughts cross my mind?
What have I done about them?
What will I do about them now?

Once you notice these thoughts, stop them in their tracks. Ask yourself “what do you mean, oh well?”.

Checklist:
Do I plan to stay alert today to all that crosses my mind?
How can I turn these “oh well” thoughts into a positive declaration that will help achieve my success dreams and goals?

Decide that second best won’t do for you.

Checklist:
Have I accepted second best in my life?
How many times?
When is that going to stop?
What are my strategies for turning this around?

Take a look back at your life, and notice the patterns of thought when facing certain situations. Make a decision to change the patterns that were sabotaging your destiny for success.

Checklist:
What patterns do I note during my lifetime that has led to results I really don’t want?
What do I plan to do about these patterns?

Let’s stop the conformity virus from contaminating our success mindset.

Today’s Declaration:

The conformity virus stops RIGHT NOW. My mind is set for success.

You Too Can Be A Champion!

The is no doubt these 58 successful entrepreneurs did not allow the conformity virus to touch their lives. Read their stories.

No 5 of the Series: Success Factors:

To achieve the impossible dream, try going to sleep. Joan Klempner

What a cynical quotation this is!

However I used it because it reveals an attitude I have heard SO many times. It comes from those who have a dream but that is all they have. Everyone has a dream, or a longing, but not everyone has a real desire, much less much less a passion for their dream.

How many young children or even teenagers have you heard say:
I would like to be in the Olympics when I grow up, or …
I would like to be in the Spurs Basketball Team one day (yep this is San Antonio, Texas calling.)

But do they REALLY desire those things? Many of them grow up and do very little with their lives).

Then now and again you hear someone say: “I am GOING TO BE an Olympic player” or “I am GOING TO BE a successful business man/woman” and they achieve it.

What is the difference between the two statements?

One is saying:
I want to be (this is a wish or a dream and is passive).

The other is saying:
I am going to be (this is a desire or a passion and is active).

The first group never achieves their dreams which they sometimes mistake as goals, and as time goes by they become cynical and even jeer at those who are starting out in life with great expectations.

These are the discouragers. You don’t want to listen to this group.

The second group has an excellent running chance of succeeding in life and achieving all of their goals. They start out with a declaration that shows desire with determination.

The dictionary describes the word desire as “wanting strongly”, and the word passion as “an irrational but irresistible motive for a belief or action”. As you can see here both words are similar, but passion is stronger.

According to Willie Shoemaker: the key to the success of excelling athletes is their desire. This is the driving factor.

In any area of life, the achievement of success will also be greatly driven by desire.

So let’s take a look at our own lives:

My Checklist:
When I look at my list of goals for my life:

How many of them are just wants or dreams (“maybes”)?
How many of the items on this list do I REALLY have a passion for?
What is my ACTION PLAN to achieve these items on my list?

Is your dream just a dream? Or do you have a passion?

You Too Can Be A Champion!

Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens. Kahlil Gibran

I have often heard people around me (in a bus, or a store) say to their friend or family member: “Are you giving me an attitude“?

It took me a while to actually understand what they were saying. (Ok, I am a kiwi, so I don’t always “get” the American “colloquialisms” at first or even second hearing).

I finally understood that what they are saying is “Are you giving me a BAD attitude“? So most people have some understanding of what attitude is, but do we all REALLY understand the actual impact it can have on our lives?

Attitude is the way you mentally look at the world around you. It is how you view your environment and your future. It is the focus you develop toward life itself. Unknown.

There is not a person living on this planet who has not at some time or another expressed that they would like succeed with something or they would like something better in their lives than what they already have.

Yet do they achieve it?

We all know that statistics show that 90 plus percent do not.

Why could they not achieve their desired success? Could their attitude be a reason? I think so.

Those 90% or so all have an excuse as to why they could not succeed. There were just too many hurdles in their way (according to them). They spend too much of their time with “an attitude” (a bad one) and not enough time being determined to win. (Of you I know that you are not included in this scenario right?)

Mm I wonder what Walt Disney would have said. He started off as a newspaper boy. What could be lower than that? Yet he did not have an excuse, he had a dream and a plan that was unstoppable. His attitude was that of a winner.

Of course we could spend thousands of words mentioning so many of those who have achieved greatness after starting out with very humble and difficult beginnings. (If you are wondering why I thought of Walt Disney and not someone like Robert Allen or Donald Trump, mm I like Mickey Mouse).

Which Life Story Version Will You Focus On?
I have often said that all of us could write at least two books about our lives. One would be a book of tragedy and the other would be a book of triumph. Both books would relate the story of the SAME LIFE, just from two different perspectives.

I know I have could easily think of a tragic story I could tell, (I won’t because the triumphant one is better Do you see what I mean?

So let’s do a checkup on ourselves:
What is my attitude towards my life?
Am I happy with how things are going?
Is my attitude helping me reach success, or hindering success in my life?

How can we tell what our attitude is really like?
Think about it, every time you hit a road block on your journey to success, what is the first thought that flashes through your mind?

Is it a thought of doubt? Or is it a thought that expresses determination to conquer no matter what?

If there are still doubts, you have work to do.

Change your mind, change your life!

You Too Can Be A Champion!

No. 3 of Series: Success Factors.

Picture this scene which I sure you have experienced at least a few times in your life:

It is a beautiful sunny day, not too hot yet not too cold. Everything in your world is going along fine; in fact it couldn’t be better. You are even singing your favorite song as you drive along the road towards your favorite meeting place for breakfast.

Suddenly a flash thought crosses your mind. It is a negative thought about something you were concerned about the other week, and then had forgotten about it. Now it comes back to haunt you, and immediately a sinking feeling hits your stomach.

A flood of thoughts hit your mind, what if this thing does happen? Or what if I don’t get that job or doubts related to your concerns of the previous week.

Now you are feeling terrible, your body starts to tense up, you can’t even think of the words of the song you were singing and you are not even sure if the sun is still shining.

What happened? Nothing in your circumstances changed.

A tiny flashing thought changed the whole day for you. How come? When you last put that concern out of your mind, you left it with a seed of fear.

Instead of facing the “what if” scenarios’ and solving them, you simply put the situation out of your mind and went on with the daily activities.

What you really did was transfer it from your conscious mind, to your subconscious mind. There it was carefully stored waiting to jump out and haunt you at any given moment to ruin your day, and that is exactly what it did.

Facing Our Fears:
I am sure you are familiar with Job of the Bible, the one who went through some severe trials and ended up doubly blessed when it was all over. In the midst of his tribulations, he made an interesting declaration: “That which I feared has come upon me”. Wow!

Remember, in a previous article, I shared a situation that happened in my own family, I had an uncle, my father’s only brother whom I vaguely remember (I was 3 years old when I last saw him). His one fear in life was he would get sick with polio which at the time was an epidemic. He died of polio at the age of 21.

So fear is a dangerous thing to allow staying in our lives.
Molly Gordon describes fear as Fantasy Expectations Appearing Real. Michael Pritchard quotes fear as being that little darkroom where negatives are developed

Negative fantasies incubated in the darkroom of our conscious and subconscious minds create fears.

So how in the world can we uproot these fears from our lives?

First thing to do is to take a few moments in a quiet place, with a blank sheet of paper and a pen/pencil.

Write down all the things you fear.

Write fast, and note down everything that comes to mind, whether you think you fear it or not.

Now read them back one at a time and face them.

If there is something you can do to avoid the “worst case scenario” do it! (If you read the Bible you will know that James tells us that faith without works is dead, in other words, real faith, or the law of attraction has to have ACTION to be complete.)

They won’t work without ACTION. The ones that are out of your control will take faith to eliminate.

Now it is time for POSITIVE ACTION. As Karen McMillan so aptly expresses it in her article Mastery path – From unconscious incompetence” to unconscious competence “This is the time to keep on going. Knowing that f.e.a.r. can be the sign that you are Feeling Excited And Ready.”

With an attitude like that, fear cannot prevail.

Let’s step out of the world of fantasy expectations and and start creating a positive reality.

Today’s Checklist:
1. Am I conscious of fears hiding in the recesses of my mind?
2. Have I taken time to discover these fears and face them?
3. Am I really prepared to face these fears?
4. What conscious ACTION am I taking to ensure that only good things can come my way?

Declaration for Today:
I believe I will have success and I AM working my plan for success, therefore SUCCESS IS MINE!

You Too Can Be A Champion!
